Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji, was a Hindu guru and a devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman. Born as Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh, he later became a wandering sadhu before settling down and establishing ashrams in Kainchi and Vrindavan.
Neem Karoli Baba's early life was marked by a deep spiritual inclination. At the age of 11, he left home to become a wandering sadhu, only to return later to live a settled married life. However, his spiritual calling led him to leave home again in 1958, and he wandered extensively throughout Northern India, earning various names such as Handi Wallah Baba and Chamatkari Baba.
During his life, Neem Karoli Baba established two main ashrams: Kainchi Dham and Vrindavan. These ashrams became centers of spiritual learning and devotion, attracting followers from around the world. Over 100 temples have been constructed in his name, reflecting his widespread influence and reverence.
Neem Karoli Baba gained international recognition as the spiritual guide to many Americans who journeyed to India during the 1960s and 1970s. Notable followers include Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, Krishna Das, and Jai Uttal. His teachings of "Love everyone, serve everyone, remember God" resonated deeply with many, including celebrities like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Julia Roberts, and Virat Kohli.
Neem Karoli Baba's teachings emphasized love, service, and devotion. He encouraged his followers to live a life of simplicity, humility, and selfless service. His philosophy of Bhakti Yoga, which focuses on devotion to God, has inspired countless individuals to seek a deeper spiritual connection.
